The King County medical examiner will lay 240 indigent people to rest Aug. 24.

The Indigent Remains program provides cremation and what officials describe as a “proper burial” for individuals who are indigent and who have died in King County. This program serves people whose families either could not be located or could not provide for the proper disposition of remains.

A ceremony starting at 11 a.m. at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Renton will include burial rites, prayers from clergy, a memorial plaque, and memories shared by friends. The public may attend.

The county’s Indigent Remains program serves deceased people whose families couldn’t be located or provide for proper disposition of the remains. The decedents’ cremated remains are stored at the medical examiner’s office until a ceremony and burial are held, typically every two years. They are buried in individual containers in shared plots, and records are kept for each one in case they are requested later by a family member.
